Eligibility and Requirements
Mandatory Status Students:
Students at the McNichols Campus holding an F1, F2, or J1 visa are required to have health insurance. A fee for the University’s health coverage will automatically be added to their student account. In some cases, the International Services Office (ISO) may grant an exemption. For more information or to request an exemption, please contact ISO.

Hard Waiver Status Students:
Students who live in residence halls or participate in athletics are required to have health insurance. A fee for the University’s health coverage will automatically be added to their student account. To waive this coverage, students must submit proof of their own health insurance with comparable coverage by September 15. Once coverage is waived, the health insurance fee will be removed from the student’s account.

Voluntary Students:
Students enrolled in in-person courses who do not fall under the Mandatory or Hard Waiver coverage categories are eligible to enroll in the University’s health insurance plan. To participate, they must enroll by September 15, after which the insurance fee will be added to their student account.

Changes in Enrollment Status

If a voluntary student switches to online-only during the open enrollment period, their coverage will be canceled and the fee will be removed from their account.

If a voluntary student switches to online-only after open enrollment or in Term II, their coverage will continue for the remainder of the plan period.

Payment Requirements

To maintain coverage, voluntary students must either:

Have a zero balance on their student account or

Be enrolled in a Payment Plan by September 15.

If the student has an outstanding balance and is not enrolled in a Payment Plan, their coverage will be canceled and the fee will be removed from their account. The student will be responsible for paying any claims.

Online-Only Students:
Students who are enrolled exclusively in online courses and do not fall into the Mandatory or Hard Waiver coverage categories are not eligible for the University’s health insurance plan. These students may explore health insurance options through private providers.
Cost

The cost of insurance for 2026-2027 is pending review and approval by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance. This should be updated in the coming months prior to the plan start date. The proposed cost of insurance for this year is:

Student – $3,134*

If you are enrolled into the annual plan, the cost of insurance will be paid through your student account.

The annual coverage period is August 20 – August 19
Enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan

Students must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days after the first day of the semester for which coverage was purchased. If a student leaves the University prior to this time, coverage will be canceled. Home study, correspondence and online courses do not fulfill the eligibility requirements that the student actively attend classes.

International students are automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan and do not need to take action. If an international student has insurance through a U.S. employer or the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission, they should contact [email protected] for further information and instructions.

Waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan

Domestic students at Detroit Mercy are required to complete the online waiver process each academic year if they do not wish to be enrolled in the Detroit Mercy student health insurance plan.

Any domestic student who does not complete the online waiver will automatically be enrolled in the student health insurance plan. Your account will be automatically charged for the cost of the insurance. Once you are enrolled, the plan cannot be canceled, and no refunds are available.

Your primary insurance plan must offer coverage in the Detroit area for all emergency and routine care. Out-of-state HMO and Medicaid coverage outside of Michigan may only cover you for emergency care. You would need to return to your home state for any routine care.

If you waive the student health insurance plan, you will only be able to enroll in the plan later if you experience a Qualifying Life Event, such as a loss of health coverage, a change of household, a change in residence or other qualifying event.

Individual health insurance options

The school requires students to maintain health insurance to help ensure there is no disruption of their education due to the financial impact of an unexpected illness or injury. Students are not required to purchase the student health insurance plan sponsored by the school and can purchase coverage meeting all of the standards of the Affordable Care Act.

The school has secured the services of UROne Benefits to assist students with a search of alternative health insurance plans. You can reach UROne Benefits at 800-722-7331.
Will your health insurance protect you while you are away at college?

The insurance plans offered either through your parents’ employer or in the Marketplace have a variety of options. Some plans will limit coverage and services if the individual is seeking routine medical services outside of their home state.

Most, if not all plans will offer coverage in the event of an emergency but would require the insured to return to their home state for routine medical care. This can result in significant out-of-pocket expenses or delays in receiving proper care.

Please check with your insurance company to see if they have any options to extend coverage to the school’s surrounding area. Most of the national insurance companies will expand coverage outside of the home state at no cost to the insured. Some will reference this as a Guest Membership or Away from Home Care.

The implementation of this type of plan can properly protect you and ensure there is access for all medical care while you are away from home. The process can take up to 60 days to complete, so please contact your insurance company in advance of arriving on campus.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Is your student covered by a Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO or EPO plan? They may not have health insurance coverage in the Detroit area. We recommended that you contact your insurance plan and inquire about a Guest Membership. This membership may be provided by your plan with no additional out-of-pocket cost to you. The Guest Membership would give your student access to health care coverage options near campus that would be the same as or similar to what would be available to them back at home. An annual renewal in the plan would be required prior to each school year.

Non-Michigan State Medicaid
Medicaid provides full health care coverage strictly within the state the student/member permanently resides. Only emergency care would be covered for the student outside of their home state.

Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser Permanente provides full health care coverage strictly within a Kaiser Permanente facility. Only emergency care would be covered for the student outside of a Kaiser facility. Kaiser Permanente does have facilities in Detroit.

Qualifying Life Event

Eligible students who lose their current coverage through no fault of their own may enroll in the school plan as a Qualifying Life Event. You must enroll within 30 days after losing coverage in order to be eligible.

Please request enrollment by completing and submitting the Qualified Life Event form.

Telemedicine Services

HealthiestYou – Free Telehealth for Students enrolled in the UHCSR Student Health Insurance Plan:

As a student covered under the UHCSR insurance plan, you have access to HealthiestYou, a free telehealth service powered by Teladoc Health. Through the HealthiestYou app or website, you can talk to a licensed doctor 24/7 by phone or video for general medical needs such as the flu, infections, and other common conditions. You can also connect with a mental health provider – including therapists and psychiatrists – by phone or video, seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. All visits are at no cost to you. To get started, visit telehealth4students.com or download the HealthiestYou app. You will need your first and last name, date of birth, and your student ID number to register. You can also access the registration link through your My Account portal by clicking on the telehealth support card under Additional Benefits. If you need help or prefer to connect by phone, call 855-870-5858.
Prescriptions

The student health insurance plan offers a prescription drug benefit. Follow the instructions below to access information on which medications are covered, cost for each prescription, and if any prior approval is required.

Visit www.uhcsr.com, select your school, and click “Find Pharmacy.” To register or log into your account, you can visit: www.uhcsr.com/myaccount.

Students should also use discount Prescription drug sites, which may result in lower out-of-pocket expenses for your medication. Two popular sites for discounted prescription medications are through Amazon and Good Rx. We provided links below for your convenience.

Michigan and Non Qualified Health Coverage

The plan is Non-Qualified Health Coverage (Non QHC). This means it excludes injury sustained by reason of a motor vehicle accident to the extent that benefits are paid or payable by any other valid and collectible insurance. Dental Insurance

Voluntary Dental

Dental coverage can make it easier to stay on top of your oral health while you’re in school. Students with coverage are more likely to get regular check-ups, which can help catch issues early and prevent bigger problems later. Taking care of your teeth and gums also supports your overall health. Many plans help reduce out-of-pocket costs by covering routine exams, cleanings, and X-rays. And you cannot be charged more than Delta Dental’s set fees when you visit an in-network dentist. Having coverage can also help you feel more prepared if something unexpected comes up.

Vision Insurance

Voluntary Vision

Vision coverage can help make it easier to take care of your eye health while you’re in school. Regular eye exams can catch changes in your vision early, and many plans help lower the cost of exams, glasses, and contacts. With a large network of providers, it’s usually easy to find a doctor nearby, and you can choose eyewear that fits your style and budget. Students can enroll in a vision plan at any time during the year, with payment completed online.

Sports Insurance

University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes are insured under an Intercollegiate Sports insurance program. This policy is intended to pay for any excess medical expenses not paid by the student-athletes primary health insurance plan.

The Intercollegiate Sports insurance policy is an excess insurance plan. This means if an injury occurs requiring medical attention claims should be submitted to the student’s primary insurance company. The Intercollegiate Sports insurance policy will only pay for any excess expenses not reimbursed by the primary insurance company and meeting the guidelines of this policy.

The student is responsible for submitting all medical bills and Explanation of Benefit statements to the claim administrator. Detroit Mercy does not assist in this process. You can ask for assistance on any Intercollegiate Sports insurance claim by emailing [email protected].

This policy will pay for up to two years from the date of the injury.

A-G Specialty – Intercollegiate Sports Insurance Claim Information

Claim Submission and Claim Filing Instructions
The Athletic Trainer will initially submit a claim to A-G Specialty Insurance on your behalf. Student-athletes are required to sign this claim form and submit all required documents to the A-G.

Detailed medical bills associated with the injury must be submitted to your primary health insurance company.

Any medical expense balance not paid by the student’s primary insurance will be reviewed by the A-G Specialty Insurance for the Intercollegiate Sports insurance.

Claims to the Intercollegiate Sports insurance policy must be submitted with a copy of all itemized medical bills and the Explanation of Benefit (EOB) statements from the student’s primary insurance company.

Bills must be submitted within 90 days from the date of the service provided to the student.

Important Claim Procedures
A-G Specialty Insurance should be notified of any injury within 30 days of the accident. Contact your Athletic Trainer for initial assistance with submitting the claim.

Any invoice for medical services should be submitted within 90 days from the date the service was provided.

The student is responsible to respond to any request from A-G Specialty Insurance or your primary insurance carrier for additional information.

Ignoring requests for information to process your claim may result in the medical provider submitting your bill to a collection agency. This could lead to personal credit problems in the future.
